About The Authors

Dr. Seymour I. Schwartz is the Distinguished Alumni Professor of Surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, New York and former chair of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Schwartz served as president of the American College of Surgeons, the American Surgical Association, and the Society of Clinical Surgery. He edited seven editions of the popular surgical textbook, Principles of Surgery, two editions of Maingot's Abdominal Operations and seven additional surgical books. He also authored seven books on American cartography and history; the latest is Gifted Hands: America's Most Significant Contributions to Surgery. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine and the American Philosophical Society.

Christopher Hoolihan is the Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarian at the Edward G. Miner Library, University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, New York. He is the compiler of the three-volume annotated catalog of the Edward G. Miner, MD, Collection of American Popular Medicine and the author of articles on the history of medical publishing and nineteenth century medical book illustration.
