Reviews

Compliance is a basic requirement for orthodontic treatmentsuccess. However, unfortunately, we cannot always rely onpatient co-operation. This is why, during the past decades,an increasing number of non-compliance orthodonticappliances have been developed. The present book gives an excellent and profound overview of the most popular noncompliance systems for Class II treatment. A total of 27 authors, all experts in their relevant fi elds, have contributed to the 398 pages of this book which are divided into five sections and 27 chapters. In the fi rst section, the basic problem of compliance for Class II treatment is addressed. The second and third section starts with an overview of inter- and intra-maxillary noncompliance appliances used for the management of Class II malocclusions. Thereafter, separate, very well elaborated and illustrated, chapters are dedicated to the basic principles and treatment effects, the indications, advantages, disadvantages, clinical procedures and case presentations for the different appliances. In terms of intermaxillary appliances, chapters are available for the Herbst appliance, the cantilever bite jumper, the Ritto appliance, the mandibular protraction appliance, the MARA, the Jasper jumper, the fl ex developer, the eureka spring, the twin force bite corrector and the Sabbagh universal spring. With respect to intramaxillary distalization appliances, chapters for the pendulum appliance, the penguin appliance, the distal jet, the Keles slider and Keles TPA, the Jones jig, the first class appliance and for orthodontic magnets have been included. The fourth section is dedicated to the use of implants and on-plants in Class II non-compliant treatment. In the final section, the clinical effi cacy of the different non-compliance appliance is addressed by presenting and comparing the scientific studies available in the literature in terms of their dentoskeletal treatment effects. Overall, this is an excellent comprehensive book on non-compliance Class II systems which covers not only the clinical aspects but also the scientifi c background of the different appliances. It may serve as a guide for the practitioner when deciding between the techniques to be used for a patient's treatment, and it is also a good teaching tool for postgraduate training. Thus, this book can be recommended for inclusion in every practice or clinic library. Sabine Ruf European Journal of Orthodontics 2007 The book is well laid out and generally easy to read with clear chapter and topic headings on every page allowing the reader to browse easily. Australian Orthodontic Journal Nov 2007 This book, therefore, gives a useful and valuableoverview of non-compliant techniques as an adjunct to conventional orthodontic procedures.
